Born in Little Rock, AR in 1977 he began his musical studies at the age of 11 with the saxophone. He played through his secondary education before deciding to attend Louisiana State University in 1995 to study classical saxophone with Dr. Griffin Campbell as well as music education. Finding that he did not want to limit his performing to classical music Russ began to venture to the city of New Orleans to learn from the seasoned musicians of the city. He later studied jazz saxophone with Tony Dagradi, Ed Peterson, and Brice Winston as well as in the many clubs and jam sessions of the city.
Upon graduation from LSU with degrees in saxophone performance and music education Russ decided to pursue a career of performance. He toured with John Lisi and Delta Funk for a year before leaving the group to record his first solo album "Never Assume" in 2001. Also at the same time he worked with jazz guitarist, Gino Giles, and the two recorded "For You" after requests from their fan base to provide a CD.
In January of 2002 Russ joined R&B supergroup Jive Train. Over 5 years the band toured extensively throughout the southeast and Mexico producing two CD's and a very large fan base in the college market.
As another side of Russ's musical career he has not lost his interest in teaching others to make and enjoy music. He still teaches saxophone, clarinet, and jazz studies to students ranging from 9 to 63 years old. His students can be seen playing in their school programs, colleges and universities, and in the club scene.
Russ never forgets how lucky he is to be blessed with his career and looks forward to the new things to come. Wherever his music takes him you can be assured it will be a ride you will not want to miss.
